Leon Appeals to Libyan Parties to Conflict to Seize Historic Opportunity to Become Peace-makers.
Pulbished on:
Tripoli, 27 August 2105(Lana) The UN Special Envoy to Libya
Bernardino Leon has urged parties to the Libyan conflict to seize
what he called a historic opportunity to become peace-makers, and
said he was confident that the several months-long talks were
approaching the final stage despite obstacles.
Briefing the UN Security Council on the latest of the Libyan
political talks on Wednesday, Leon said the process has succeeded in
clearing climate of distrust between the political parties, and to
reach a road map to resolution of the crisis and ending a year-long
armed conflict in the country.
The current talks are a legitimate step in which Libyan can
ensure a continuation of the democratic transition triggered in their
country, Leon said.
Leon urged the UN Security Council members to present a clear
strategy to settle the Libyan crisis, and to support the prospective
consensus government effort to contain or eradicate the threat of
terrorist groups which pose threat not only to Libya, but the region
and whole world.
He said the situation in Libya is on the verge of collapse,
thousands have become displaced and the number on the increase
because of lack of medical care and electricity cut off in several
parts of the country.
The Head of the UN mission thanked Libyan leaders and countries
which offered support to the peace process and talks between Libyan
parties.
