Egypt Rejects AU Invitation of Turkey and Qatar for Meeting on Libya Tripoli, 28 January 2015(Lana) Egypt has objected an invitation by the African Union to Turkey and Qatar to take part in the 'International Contact Group for Libya' which is
Pulbished on:
"Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry has strongly objected to the
presence of Turkey and Qatar at the meeting of the International
Contact Group for Libya," the source told The Anadolu Agency.
Shoukry had told Ismail al-Sharqawi, the AU's Peace and Security
Council chief, that there was "no need" for the participation of Doha
and Ankara at the meeting, according to the source.
"AU officials have defended their decision to invite Qatar and Turkey
since the two states have a stake in the Libyan crisis," the source
said.
Taking part in the Contact group meetings are Algeria, Tunisia,
Egypt, Sudan, Chad, Niger, along with the five members of the
Security Council and influential countries like Germany, Japan,
Spain, Qatar, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and UAE.
The AU ministerial council meeting in Addis Ababa was marred by
strong divisions between African foreign ministers according to a
source who took part in the discussion in statements to the Anadolu
correspondent.
The source indicated that there were two streams, one led by
Algeria rejecting military intervention to solve the crisis, while
two other countries, he did not name them vigorously support
intervention to end to the conflict and avoid a spread to the
neighboring countries.
