GNA Foreign Ministry Issues Statement on 'Africa Day'.

Tripoli, 25 May 2016(Lana) The Tripoli-based Government of National Accord on Wednesday issued a statement to mark 'Africa Day' which falls on May 24. The Africa Day takes significance being the day when African founders, the leaders of Africa, gathered in Addis Ababa on May 25, 1963 to declare the founding charter of the Organisation of African Unity, which sought to satisfy the peoples of Africa aspirations for freedom, solidarity and independence, the statement said. Commemoration of this anniversary coincides with establishment by the people of Libya of the historic political agreement to set up the Presidential Council, which assumed its duties from the capital Tripoli, in anticipation of a full transition to a peaceful democratic system and endorsement of a new constitution, it said. 'The statement re-affirmed Libya's sense of pride in its African belonging and commitment to continue to join the common African action in response to crucial issues of the continent, namely establishment of security and stability and confronting terrorist threats across the continent.' It called on fellow African nations to commit themselves to unity, solidarity and coordination as a basic pillars to achieve sustainable development in the continent. =Lana=
